Ownary privacy policy

What stays on your phone

Everything you put into Ownary is stored only in the app’s private storage on your phone:

• item details, categories, reminders, service records and settings
• photos, receipts and documents you add
• text read from scanned receipts

The developer never receives any of it. There is no sign-in and nothing to sync to us.

Receipt reading happens on your phone. When you scan a receipt, the text is recognised on-device by Google’s ML Kit. The image and text are not uploaded for recognition.

App lock uses Android’s own fingerprint, face or screen-lock prompt. Ownary never sees or stores your biometrics or PIN.

Optional: encrypted backups

Backup files you save yourself. You can export an encrypted backup file and save it wherever you choose, such as your Downloads folder, a USB drive or a cloud drive. The file is encrypted on your phone with a passphrase only you know (AES-256-GCM, with the key derived from your passphrase). Without that passphrase nobody, including us and the service storing the file, can open it. We can’t recover a forgotten passphrase.

Automatic backup to your own Google Drive (Ownary Pro, off unless you turn it on). If you turn this on, Ownary uploads the same encrypted backup file to a private app folder in your Google Drive, called the “appDataFolder”. Only Ownary can see that folder; it doesn’t appear in your Drive file list. Ownary asks Google only for permission to use that folder, not the rest of your Drive. It keeps your three most recent backups there and deletes older ones.

To show which account backups go to, Ownary reads your Google account’s email address from Drive and stores it on your phone. Backups travel to Google over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), and their contents stay encrypted with your passphrase, so Google cannot read them. To make automatic backups possible, you choose to let the phone remember your passphrase-derived key. It is stored encrypted by your phone’s secure hardware (Android Keystore) and never leaves the phone.

This Drive backup is the only feature in Ownary that uses the internet.

Purchases

Ownary Pro is a one-time purchase through Google Play. Google handles the payment; Ownary never sees your payment details. The app only asks Google Play whether you own Ownary Pro, so it can unlock it, including after a refund or on a new phone. Google’s handling of purchases is covered by the Google Play Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy.

Reviews

After you’ve added a few items, Ownary may ask Google Play to show its standard rating prompt, once. Any rating or review you leave goes to Google Play, not to us.

Google services inside the app

Ownary uses some Google components: ML Kit (receipt scanning and reading), Google Play Billing, Google Play In-App Review and, if you turn on Drive backup, Google sign-in authorisation and Google Drive. These run under Google’s own privacy policy. Google states that some of them, such as ML Kit and Google Play services, may send Google limited technical information such as diagnostics and performance metrics. Ownary itself does not collect analytics or track you.

Deleting your data

• Everything on your phone: uninstall Ownary, or go to Android Settings → Apps → Ownary → Storage → Clear storage. The developer holds no copy, so there’s nothing for us to delete.
• Backups in Google Drive: in Ownary, go to Settings → Backup → Disconnect Google Drive and choose to delete the backups. You can also delete them in Google Drive on the web: Settings → Manage apps → Ownary → Delete hidden app data. Disconnecting also revokes Ownary’s Drive access.
• Backup files you saved yourself: delete them wherever you saved them.

Children

Ownary is a general-audience app and isn’t directed at children under 13.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at this address with a new date. Material changes will also be mentioned in the app’s release notes.
